Orlando toll roads are easy to drive once you know how your rental car will be charged. The part that causes trouble is sorting that out after you have already passed beneath a toll gantry.

This guide covers the terms you may see at the rental counter, how to compare toll and no-toll routes, and what to settle before leaving Orlando International Airport.

You will not find toll-price estimates here. Rates and rental-car fees change, so check the current toll calculator and your rental agreement before the trip.

Why route apps suggest Orlando toll roads

Several major roads around Orlando charge tolls, including State Road 417, State Road 528 and portions of State Road 429. State Road 528 connects with Orlando International Airport, while State Road 417 runs through east Orlando and toward Kissimmee. Depending on traffic and the address of your vacation home, an app may use one or both.

These routes can keep you on limited-access roads instead of sending you through a string of traffic lights. That does not mean the toll route is always the best choice. A no-toll route may be perfectly reasonable at one time of day and a sizable detour at another.

The exact location of the home matters too. A rental near Storey Lake Resort may produce a different airport route than one near ChampionsGate Resort, even though both addresses are commonly described as being in the greater Orlando vacation area.

Enter the complete street address before you pull out of the garage. Resort names, ZIP codes and general labels such as “Kissimmee” cover broad areas. Our vacation-home map search can help you see where a property sits before arrival day.

Electronic tolling terms you may encounter

As of July 2026, the Central Florida Expressway Authority’s roads use all-electronic tolling, and its cash lanes closed in 2025. Do not build your airport plan around stopping at a staffed booth with a handful of quarters.

Term What it means for a guest What to check
E-PASS or SunPass Prepaid electronic toll systems accepted on Florida toll roads. Confirm that the transponder and rental vehicle are properly connected to the account.
Pay By Plate or TOLL-BY-PLATE Cameras record the vehicle’s license plate when no accepted transponder is detected. In a rental car, billing is handled under the rental company’s agreement rather than mailed directly to you.
Rental-car toll program A service offered by the rental company or its toll-processing provider. Ask about enrollment, service charges, billing timing and which roads or lanes are covered.
Visitor Toll Pass A temporary electronic pass available to eligible travelers renting and returning a car at Orlando International Airport. Check current eligibility, reserve through its app and decline the rental company’s toll program if required.
Express or managed lane A separate lane with electronic toll requirements, such as I-4 Express. Do not enter until you know your chosen payment method is accepted there.

E-PASS and SunPass are different programs, but both work across Florida’s toll-road network. Several compatible out-of-state transponders are also accepted. If you bring a portable transponder from home, verify Florida coverage with the issuing agency before traveling.

Use only one active toll method in the vehicle. Two exposed transponders can create duplicate-charge problems. If the rental car already has a toll device, ask how to close or shield it before using your own.

Checking a rental-car toll agreement

Rental companies do not all handle tolls the same way. Some plans charge only on days when a toll road is used. Others may use a daily or rental-period arrangement. Plate-based programs and cars with installed transponders can also have different terms.

Before accepting the keys, ask these questions:

  • Is the toll program automatic, optional or something I must decline?
  • Are there service charges in addition to the tolls themselves?
  • Is a charge applied only on toll-use days or across a longer part of the rental?
  • Does the program cover every Florida toll road I may use?
  • Does it cover express or managed lanes?
  • Can I use my own compatible transponder instead?
  • How long after the rental might toll charges appear?

Get the answer from the written agreement, not only from a quick conversation at a busy counter. Take a photo or save the digital copy where you can find it later. If you decline the rental program, make sure that choice appears in the paperwork.

Visitor Toll Pass at Orlando International Airport

Visitor Toll Pass is run by the Central Florida Expressway Authority for qualifying travelers who pick up and return participating rental cars at Orlando International Airport. The temporary hangtag is reserved through an app, collected near airport rental counters and returned at the airport at the end of the trip.

Users must decline the rental company’s toll program and add the rental car’s license plate in the app. Participation depends on the rental company and current program rules, so review the eligibility list before relying on it. Remember to return the hangtag; the program states that a fee applies if it is not returned.

Using route settings without adding a long detour

Apple Maps and Waze include settings to avoid toll roads, and other navigation apps offer similar route controls. Check the setting before starting the car. It is much easier to compare two routes while parked than while merging out of the airport.

  1. Enter the full vacation-home address.
  2. View the suggested route with toll roads allowed.
  3. Turn on “avoid tolls” and review the alternative.
  4. Compare the travel-time estimate, road type and number of turns.
  5. Choose the route that fits your toll arrangement and comfort level.

Avoiding tolls can make sense when the time difference is small. It can be less appealing when the alternate route adds many surface-road turns, especially after a late flight or during a summer downpour. Orlando’s July forecast pattern often includes afternoon showers and thunderstorms, so leave room for changing road conditions rather than treating the first arrival estimate as a promise.

Do not confuse “avoid tolls” with “avoid highways.” Turning on both can send you through local roads you never intended to use. I usually change one setting at a time and look at the full route before committing.

Planning the airport-to-rental drive

Handle tolls while you still have airport Wi-Fi, a parked car and access to the rental desk. Once everyone is buckled in, confirm that your phone is charging, the address is correct and the toll setting matches the payment choice you made.

For many Kissimmee addresses, State Road 417 is one of the routes an app may suggest. State Road 528 may appear for homes reached from the airport’s west side or through an I-4 connection. Davenport trips vary considerably because vacation communities extend across a wide area, and western addresses may bring State Road 429 or other toll-road segments into the route.

Follow current road signs rather than memorizing an online itinerary. Construction, incidents and congestion can change the recommended route between the time you plan at home and the time you land.

What to confirm before the return trip

The drive back to the airport deserves the same quick check. Your app may remember a toll preference from another outing, or someone else in the family may have changed it.

  • Confirm the departure terminal and rental-car return location.
  • Check the route with and without tolls before leaving the home.
  • Allow extra time for fuel, luggage and rental-car return.
  • Make sure a portable transponder is removed from the windshield.
  • Remove the rental plate from your personal toll account or app when required.
  • Return a Visitor Toll Pass at the designated airport location.
  • Keep the rental agreement and toll receipt until final charges have posted.

If you receive a later charge that you do not understand, compare the transaction date with your trip record and contact the rental company or toll-program provider listed in your agreement. Avoid responding to unexpected toll-payment texts through an unfamiliar link; toll agencies have warned drivers about scam messages.

Once the toll plan is settled, the airport drive becomes a normal part of the trip rather than a guessing game. Start by choosing one of our Orlando-area homes in the collection above, then use our vacation-home map to check its exact location before travel day.
